HEALTHY TRANSFORMATIONS — DR. STEVE HAYMAN

We are now well into another hot Florida summer and I hope that this newsletter finds all of my readers healthy and well.  Your personal health is truly your most prized possession and you must protect it at all cost.  Staying healthy in this world of genetically modified foods, produce sprayed with pesticides, “Franken-foods” full of chemicals and preservatives, meats tainted with steroids, and prescription drugs claiming to prevent or cure every illnesses known to man can be a daunting task. Please understand “Big Farming”, “Big Food”, and “Big Pharma” are not interested in your health and wellbeing.  Their actions are driven only by corporate profits and growing their companies’ market share as large as possible.  Their food scientists and drug scientists are well aware of the dangerous health conditions their foods and drugs are causing not only here in America but throughout the world.  Countries around the world that adopt our “western diet” and begin consuming large quantities of pharmaceutical products as we do, soon find increasing chronic debilitating health conditions and an increased mortality rate.In this month’s newsletter I would like to discuss, with you the reader, what consuming Soy in your diet may mean to your health.  This is one of those subjects that many individuals have an opinion on and many are staunch in their beliefs about soy, be they positive or negative.Concerning the consumption of soy in the human diet I fall in the NEGATIVE CAMP!  For those who fall in the positive camp please hear me out on this subject by reading the entire newsletter.
I would dare say that there have been several hundred books written on the subject of soy in the human diet over the last few decades.  Many are positive but many find that soy falls far short as a healthy food source for humans.
HOW IS SOY USED? The vast majority of soybeans grown in America and use by the American food industry are used as Soy Protein and Soy Oil.  Soy oil is used in many commercially processed foods and is extremely inexpensive for the food industry.  Soy protein is used in many of these same food products and is a cheap protein filler that helps them get the protein count up on their ingredients list.  Please believe me when I say there is nothing natural or safe about these products. From 2000 to 2007, U.S. food manufacturers introduced more than 2,700 new soy-based foods, and new soy products continue to appear on your grocer’s shelves.Make NO mistake, SOY IS A VERY BIG BUSINESS! From 1992 to 2006, soy food sales increased from $300 million to nearly $4 billion, practically overnight, according to the Soyfoods Association of North America. This growth came about due to a massive shift in attitudes about soy. And this shift was no accident—it was the result of a massive investment in advertising by the soy industry that’s been wildly successful.  Many of the claims made by the pro-soy advocates are outright untruths or extremely misleading at best.According to a survey
Consumer Attitudes about Nutrition 2008 (by the United Soybean Board):
•  As of 2007, 85 percent of consumers perceive soy products as healthful.
•  70 percent of consumers believe soybean oil is good for them.
•  84 percent of consumers agree with the FDA’s claim that consuming 25 grams of soy protein daily reduces your risk of heart disease. As you can see the millions upon millions of dollars spent on advertising the healthy properties of consuming soy have been well spent by the food industries to convince the public that soy is good for you.In my opinion these are frightening numbers.  It is obvious that most Americans go happily on their way consuming dangerous soy products while thinking they are doing something positive for their health.SIMILAC  cow drink soy
The brilliant advertising and marketing plans used by the “Big Food Industry” are making them billions of dollars all the while wrongfully duping uneducated Americans into consuming soy foods and feeling they are doing something healthy.Unfermented soy is dangerous to your health and should be used only for feeding animals.  For centuries, Asian people have been consuming fermented soy products such as miso, natto, tempeh, and soy sauce, and enjoying the health benefits. Fermented soy does not wreak havoc on your body like unfermented soy products do.

Dr. Joseph Mercola reports that he has carefully reviewed thousands of studies published on soy and strongly believes the risks of consuming unfermented soy products FAR outweigh any possible benefits.

SOY

HEALTH RISK RELATED TO UNFERMENTED SOY USE

One of the health risks that concerns me about soy products is the anti-thyroid agents and enzymes that block the absorption of many vitamins and minerals.  Soy inhibits an enzyme known as Trypsin which the body uses to break down proteins. Because soy inhibits trypsin from working properly long term use of non-fermented soy can cause loss of muscle mass and a decrease in bone strength.

Soy consumption can be a major cause of hypothyroidism as well as autoimmune thyroid disorders such as Hashimoto’s disease and Graves’ disease.  It is nearly impossible to rectify thyroid problems in patients (like vegetarians and vegans) who continue to eat soy as a major protein source.  I have personally seen this in my practice many times.  Nutritional research continues to find more and more health problems related to soy consumption.

Here is just a sampling of the health effects that have been linked to soy consumption:
·        Breast cancer
·        Brain damage
·        Infant abnormalities
·        Thyroid disorders
·        Kidney stones
·        Immune system impairment
·        Severe, potentially fatal food allergies
·        Impaired fertility
·        Danger during pregnancy and nursing

OTHER FACTS THAT MAKE SOY RISKY!
1.     91 percent of soy grown in the US is genetically modified (GM).
2.     Soy contains natural toxins known as “anti-nutrients.”
3.     Soy contains goitrogens.  Goitrogens are substances that block the synthesis of thyroid hormones and interfere with iodine metabolism, thereby interfering with your thyroid function.
4.     Soy contains phytates.  Phytates (phytic acid) bind to metal ions, preventing the absorption of certain minerals, including calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc — all of which are co-factors for optimal biochemistry in your body. This is particularly problematic for vegetarians, because eating meat reduces the mineral-blocking effects of these phytates (so it is helpful—if you do eat soy—to also eat meat).
5.   Soy has toxic levels of aluminum and manganese.  Soybeans are processed (by acid washing) in aluminum tanks, which can leak high levels of aluminum into the final soy product. Soy formula has up to 80 times higher manganese than is found in human breast milk.
6.   Soy infant formula puts your baby’s health at risk.  Nearly 20 percent of U.S. infants are now fed soy formula, but the estrogens in soy can irreversibly harm your baby’s sexual development and reproductive health. Infants fed soy formula take in an estimated five birth control pills’ worth of estrogen every day.

A WONDERFUL BENEFIT OF FERMENTED SOY PRODUCTS

One of the main benefits of fermented soy, especially natto, is that it is the best food source of vitamin K2. Vitamin K2 is essential to preventing osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and diseases of the brain such as dementia, and protecting you from various cancers including prostate, lung, liver cancer and leukemia.

Vitamin K is sometimes referred to as the “forgotten vitamin” because its benefits are often overlooked. It was named after the word “Koagulation,” to reflect its essential role in blood clotting. In fact, the enzyme nattokinase—derived from natto—is safer and more powerful than aspirin in dissolving blood clots, and has been used safely for more than 20 years.Vitamin K2 works in synergy with Vitamin D to maintain healthy bones.  Vitamin K2 also directs healthy calcium deposition into bones and teeth instead of arteries.

VEGETARIANS & VEGANS

If you are a strict vegetarian or vegan you may be at risk of some of the above health conditions if you are supplying most of your protein needs from unfermented soy sources.  If you are strict in this dietary lifestyle then you are undoubtedly consuming many of the soy foods listed below.

Soy foods to avoid
·        Tofu
·        Soybean oil
·        Soymilk
·        Soy cheese, soy ice cream, soy yogurt
·        Soy “meat” (meatless products made of TVP)
·        Soy protein
·        Edamame
·        Soy infant formula

The best way to eliminate non-fermented soy from your diet is to avoid all processed foods and instead purchase whole foods that you prepare yourself.

Healthy Soy Foods to Choose From
·        Tempeh
·        Miso
·        Natto
·        Natural organic Soy Sauce

Our topic for this month’s newsletter concerns an extremely important condition however, one that the vast majority of people have never heard about.  I would like to thank Dr. Bruce West, a much respected California physician and an amazing nutritionist for much of the content contained in this newsletter. The health condition that I will share with you today is known as B-Complex Deficiency Syndrome (BCDS).  I would dare say that 98% of you reading this newsletter haven’t heard of this very common condition.  If at this point the topic sounds as though it will be boring, please keep reading as I am sure that you will soon understand how common this condition is and in fact may know someone that may be affected.B-Complex Deficiency Syndrome (BCDS) is some time referred to as the “Great Mimicker”.  Millions of people are treated with powerful drugs and surgery for conditions caused by BCDS because they are diagnosed as having other conditions.Symptoms run the gamut from emotional disorders (such as depression, confusion, illogical fears, and even suicide) to heart disorders (such as heart failure, complete heart block, cardiac arrhythmias) and more.  With children the emotional problems are more severe and can include depression, nervousness, anxiety, irritability, mental fatigue, manic depression, paranoiac thinking, hostility, rage, vague and morbid fears.Chronic cases of BCDS can also cause beriberi of the heart.  The near paralysis of the heart muscle that can occur with BCDS or beriberi of the heart ends up being diagnosed as congestive heart failure, bundle branch block, irregular heartbeat or arrhythmia, fibrillation, or any of a dozen other names.  Instead of treating the root problem (B-complex deficiency) patients are instead treated with drugs to force the heart to beat stronger, faster, slower, etc..
B VITAMIN RICH FOODSUnfortunately, the foods and extracts richest in B vitamins are those that almost no one eats, especially in the amounts needed.  They include a special yeast, wheat germ, adrenals, liver, beetroot juice, rice bran, carrots, and more.  Since eating large quantities of these foods is unrealistic we instead turn to whole-food supplements, made from these sources, and processed without heat or chemicals to maintain their vital life force.  The produce of choice is Cataplex-B by Standard Process.Common food sources with significant amounts of B vitamins include lean meats, green leafy vegetables, and organic eggs.  Most young people and many adults shy away from these foods in favor of their favorite foods which are processed non-foods that are quite deficient not only in B vitamins but many other crucial nutrients as well.
DONT LEAVE THESE FOODS OUT OF YOUR DIET:

Green Leafy Vegetables

The Standard American Diet (SAD) is filled with non-foods that are primarily carbohydrates, most of which are refined, full of sugar and highly processed.  These non-foods are nearly devoid of B vitamins and omega-3 fats —essential brain and heart foods.

Our Young people are suffering. As young people become more and more deeply confused and sick from the Standard American Diet and the B vitamin deficiencies it causes, they begin to suffer from B-Complex Deficiency Syndrome (BCDS).  This condition is near epidemic proportions among the American youth population, as they gobble up soda, candy, pop-tarts, Twinkies, doughnuts, cookies, breads, french-fries, fast-food, and mountains of processed concoctions that are not only devoid of B vitamins, but make the B-vitamin deficiency worse. In young Americans the first signs of BCDS are emotional and in the brain.  Physiology textbooks show that vitamin B deficiency in young people often starts out as depression.  But it can quickly worsen to nervousness, anxiety, irritability, mental fatigue, severe depression, manic depression, paranoiac thinking, hostility, rage, vague fears, morbid fears, and an overwhelming fear that something horrible is about to happen.  And what is the medical answer to this horrific problem?  More antidepressants and psychotropic drugs! It makes you wonder if violent disasters like that in Sandy Hook Connecticut would  have happened if young people were getting real brain food nutrients instead of eating the Standard American Diet year after year as they grow and develop. What About our Senior Adults?  B-Complex Deficiency Syndrome results in beriberi of the heart in older Americans.  Two of the major causes of heart disease are 1) beriberi of the heart muscle (B-vitamin deficiency) and 2) inflammation in the coronary arteries. Both of these are brought about by the Standard American Diet and the medical low-fat diet.  Both are nutritional deficiency diseases.  Both can be resolved only with whole food or whole-food supplements.  Synthetic supplements, as proven time and time again, have little to no effect on heart disease. The whole-food supplements that are listed below are whole vitamin B complex as well as minerals, and the whole vitamin C complex which includes bioflavonoids, whole antioxidants, and more.  These and only these, along with a dietary change, are the things that will stop and reverse beriberi of the heart and inflammation of the coronary arteries.
Two Steps to Healing Heart DiseaseStep 1:  Make the simple switch to a Mediterranean diet.Step 2:  Take four simple supplements that contain the heart healthy nutrients.
·        Cardio-Plus —– 6 daily.
·        Cataplex B —— 6 daily.
·        Min-Tran——– 6 daily.
·        Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) —– 3 daily. These whole-food supplements are produced by Standard Process Labs.  These are all available in my office and from many natural health care providers.  For those with emotional disorders (Adults or Children) use Cataplex B.  For children that can’t sit still, who fidget constantly, or have tics, use Cataplex B & Cataplex G.  It will amaze you how these whole-food supplements will calm the nervous and the child.  Your natural health care provider can dose these products based on the age of your child.B-Complex Deficiency Syndrome (BCDS) is far more common than you might think, as mentioned above it is reaching near epidemic proportions.  Our nation is consuming more and more processed food each year.  The essential B-vitamins that are required for good health are missing from these foods and we are all suffering as a result.  If you or your children are guilty of eating too many processed fast foods, frozen prepared foods, and packaged, canned, or boxed foods PLEASE at least take the time to supplement your diet with quality whole-food supplements.  Remember, synthetic vitamin supplements will not work to prevent BCDS.
Contact your natural health care provider or call me and stock up on the Standard Process supplements.  There is no substitute for QUALITY!Standard Process Labs ——- Palmyra Wi.

ARCHIVE:

This month I would like to share a few steps you can take to reduce your risk of contracting cancer. Cancer is probably the most frightening diagnosis there is and as most of you know it is the second leading cause of death in America (Heart Disease is the first).

A total of 1,638,910 new cancer cases and 577,190 deaths from cancer will occur in the United States in 2012.

Cancer forms when an abnormal group of cells fail to complete their normal life cycle and die —- a process called apoptosis. Instead, the cells undergo unregulated growth and multiplication. This eventually forms a tumor. Sometime parts of these tumors can break away and migrate through the body, a process known as metastasis.

Cancer CellsCancer cells actually form as the DNA of the cell is damaged by substances known as carcinogens.  Just a few of these carcinogenic substances include; tobacco smoke, medical radiation, environmental toxicities, obesity, synthetic hormones, viruses, bacteria, parasites and nutritional deficiencies. The three traditional forms of treatment for cancer are chemo-therapy, radiation therapy, and surgery.  Conventional medicine would have you believe that these forms of treatment are effective treatments for most cancers.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  We have spent and untold fortune trying to fight cancer with these methods and largely failed.  We have spent far more on treating cancer than we have on research on cancer prevention.Let me just say here that the most effective prevention for cancer is a healthy, well-nourished body with an optimally functioning immune system.  This is true and will ALWAYS be true!We should be investing our money and brain power looking for natural therapies that promote a healthy body and immune system because an optimally functioning immune system can prevent cancer from forming in the first place.   If the body has all the nutrients it needs, and it is not compromised by harmful agents, it is unlikely that cancer will get a foothold.
SEVEN SIMPLE STEPS1. Don’t Smoke Cigarettes. Smoking can cause  cancers of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, kidney, bladder, cervix, and acute leukemia as well as the most common smoking cancer LUNG.  Cigarette smoke contains arsenic, benzene, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, nickel, polonium-210, vinyl chloride, formaldehyde, benzopyrene, and toluene.2. Maintain Adequate Iodine Levels. Iodine is a natural substance that is found in every cell you the body.  This essential nutrient is concentrated in the glandular system, which includes the thyroid, breast, ovaries, uterus, and prostate.  Many people in America are deficient in iodine and chronic low levels of iodine are associated with cancer.  Studies show that iodine can reverse or halt cancer cell progression.3. Avoid Synthetic Chemicals. It is vitally important to avoid animal products that contain synthetic chemicals, which conventionally raised animals are fed in order to speed their growth cycle.  When buying non-free range animals these growth hormones and antibiotics do make to our plates. Conventional farming practices use large amounts of pesticides to grow our foods.  Soy farmers in particular use inordinate amounts of pesticides when growing soy crops.  Other offenders include artificial sweeteners, MSG, food dyes, and preservatives.  The FDA allows thousands of chemicals to be added to our food supply, many of which are proven to be carcinogenic.4. Don’t Eat White Foods. Refined foods use lots of sugar, salt, and flour which when eaten regularly lead to nutritional deficiencies that harm the immune system.  Eating just one teaspoon of white sugar has been proven to reduce your immune function for 5 hours.  Common table salt has been bleach and processed to eliminate all nutrients, whereas sea salt contains more than 80 needed trace minerals.   Vegetable oils have been hydrogenated (trans fats) and are known to be carcinogenic.  Coconut oil and cold-pressed olive oils are healthy substitutes.5. Watch Out for Heavy Metals.  The vast majority of Americans have high levels of heavy metals, such as mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium and nickel.  Mercury by far is the most dangerous heavy metal of all.  The most common exposure to mercury is dental amalgams.  Mercury exposure can also be a problem by consuming too much tuna, shark, and swordfish.  Mercury is known to suppress healthy immune function in animals and humans.6. Avoid Radiation Exposure.  We know radiation can cause cancer so we need to make sure medical procedures that utilize radiation be performed only when absolutely necessary.  Examples of common medical tests using radiation include; mammograms, CT scans, plain film x-rays, dental x-rays, and PET scans.7. Supplement Your Immune System.  The immune system relies on adequate supplies of vitamins and minerals to function optimally.  Common nutritional deficiencies include:

  • Iodine
  • Magnesium
  • Potassium
  • Sulfur
  • Vitamin B1
  • Vitamin B12
  •  Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D (Please my November 2011 Newsletter)
  • Zinc

To be protected from cancer you must eat as healthy as possible and take quality whole food supplements.  These nutritional deficiencies develop slowly and silently over many years of dietary abuse.

Cancer is an extremely complex condition.  No matter how organizations like the American Cancer Society and the Komen Foundation spin their messages, we are losing the war on cancer.  Our overall results in treating cancer for the last few decades have been less than rewarding for the doctors and researchers that spend their lives trying to help cancer victims.  Since treatment outcomes are so unreliable in curing cancer (over a half million cancer deaths annually) we need to commit more of our resources to cancer prevention. At the fore front of prevention should be nutritional research and a crack-down on the food industry that continue to deceive the American public about the safety of the products they produce.
What you should do to protect yourself and your family is clear.  Educate yourself about the dangers of processed foods (I like to call many of these foods “Franken-foods) and learn more about the foods that truly can present and even cure cancer.I stand ready to discuss cancer prevention and good nutritional practices with anyone who is truly interested. If you have found this Newsletter helpful in your quest for good health please visit my website atwww.drstephenhayman.comwhere I have all of my previous Newsletters archived.  You may find a topic there that may be of help to you, a family member, or a friend.
